I am a naval architect with an active and educated interest in the working sail of the 19th century. Having said this, nowhere can I find any reference to the Cutty Sark ever being painted white, very few ships were. Cutty Sark was black, whith a fine white waterline band, and a fine white cove line. Even in her last working days, cut down to a barque and trading as the "Joseph Ferreira" she was never painted white.
Nor were her lower masts ever tan, not to mention that the main skysail is missing.
Accuracy in art is always a touchy point, and I support all artists license to shift reality a little to show a quality not instantly apparent in the subject, however this is too far off, and shows lack of any fundamental knowledge of the subject.
Cutty Sark's contemporary and rival "Thermopoly" although green through most of her life, was painted white during a period of working in the North Pacific.
Maybe the artist has his ships mixed up.
